hitchcock(2024)  Guess what, The Birds

Good evening :p

Alfred Hitchcock(1899–1980) is being undoubtedly is the most popular movie director in the world. Many of his movie become a successful movie, not only in box office but also in movie critic. Some of his popular movies including Vertigo (1958), Rear Window (1954), Rope(1948), The Birds(1963), North by Northwest (1959), Shadow of a Doubt (1943), The Man Who Knew Too Much(1934), Stranger In The Train(1951), Family Plot(1976) and many more. Most of his film always have a common, first its including Hitchcock himself as a cameo and second its always about mystery or murder.

(Now Hitchcock didn’t become a cameo in Hitchcock movie because Hitchcock already passed away)

This movie is made long time after Hitchcock passed away in 1980. Centered on situation when Hitchcock (Anthony Hopkins) make one of his most popular movie, Psycho (1960) (Note: you can read my review about Psycho here). But unfortunately if you expecting this movie tells you a lot about how Hitchcock make Psycho (1960) a masterpiece, this movie focusing on the love drama between him and Alma Reville(Helen Mirren), his wife.

Being known after directing sucessfull movie North by Northwest, Hitch (i called Hitch from here, note he didn’t like to be called Cock after his name, i knew it from this movie), Hitchcock feels that he need to make a different type of  movie after that movie. And the newcoming of a new director, like Henry George Cluzot, make media like newspaper make a comparison between him, things that make Hitch stressed.

Alfred Hitchcock: “The only worse than a visit to the dentist is a visit to the censor.”

Alma, who think  make a good companionship with his friend Whitfield “Whit” Cook(Danny Huston)  suggesting Hitch to read the script that they make together. But Hitch choosing to ignore both of them and focusing on pursuing on his own idea. The bond between Alma and Whit come closer, actually after Alma being looking after Hitchcock interesting in “Blonde Woman”, Janet Leigh(Scarlett Johansson) and after a moment Hicth finally getting idea from novel Psycho. Hitch love the story of the murder by a complexity and unique character like Norman Bates.

Murder is being a good friend of Hitch, not only in his dream but in his real life his hobby of character of Ed Gein, affecting his life.

After this, Hitch must using his own money by selling his house and his pool to producing this film. The dissagreement between him and Paramount about the type of movie Hitch must make, made him angry. In the other side, Alma himself although didn’t like Hitchcock idea by selling his house and continuing make a murder movie, still supporting him by selling the house. Conflict become more complex after we knew Hitch need to using Vera Miles(Jessica Biel) as a Lila Crane just to finishing his five years personal contract to using Vera. And we knew that Vera already make Hitch angry by being pregnant just a week before movie production (Hitch in some time said that Vera could be a successor for his favorites blonde Grace Kelly, who choosing to live in “heaven” just in the age of 26 than living as an actress ).

The relationship between Alma and Hitch like a fire when Hitch finally know that Alma make a special connection with Whit, not only in work but possibly worse. The making of Psycho find a real problem when the people in film censoring institute didn’t find good about shower scene and toilet scene. But Hitchcock is a real man, he still choosing to using his idea by didn’t deleting toilet scene and shower scene. (*note: in that era, film industry in US didn’t allow director to using a nude scene and toilet scene).

One day Alma visiting whit in his house near the beach, but after seeking him making love with another girl, Alma feel being dumped and fooled. Alma and Hitch begin to explore their husband-wife relationship again after this event, especially after Hitch sick of being stress making his film.

With a full support from Alma, finally Hitch sucessfull to produce Psycho. And its getting a amazing achievement.

Alfred Hitchcock: I will never find a Hitchcock blonde as beautiful as you.
Alma Reville: Oh, Hitch. I’ve waited thirty years to hear you say that.
Alfred Hitchcock: And that my dear, is why they call me the Master of Suspense.

Searching for another blonde? 😉

There is two things that we learned from this film (at least), first is “Behind every successful man, there is a supporting woman, it could be a mother, or a lover.” The second thing is “Behind a masterpiece there is a dedication and strong will”.

* Due to the conflict schedule, Andrew Garfield cancelled to portray Anthony Perkins. (I think Andrew  would be good too, hey look at the photo below, they both look similar didn’t they?).

* This film is produce in Fox Searchlight Pictures, thats make us judge the connection between Hitchcock who being dumped by Paramount make sense (anyway, Paramount would want to burning their own face by telling the people about that kind of treatment to Mr. Hichcock).

* Mr. Hitchcock is the only movie director whom remake his own film, The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) being remake in The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), and yes both success & received a good critics.

* The first of Mr. Hitchcock movie was named “number 13”, many says thats its because that movie is the thirteen time Mr. Hitchcock including in movie production.
